Overview
Maternal mortality is unacceptably high. Globally about 830 women die every day from pregnancy- or childbirth-related complications.. Almost all these deaths occurred in low-resource settings, and most could be prevented. Most maternal deaths in Zanzibar occurs during child birth and in the immediate postnatal period Although progress has been made in reduction of maternal mortality around the globe between 1990 – 2015, some countries in Sub Saharan Africa such as Tanzania did not achieve the MDG5 and their maternal mortality ratio remains high at 454/100,000 livebirths (data source).
